Overview

This course covers topics related to teaching dance for K-12. Students will learn to implement national and state standards for Dance through readings, class demonstrations, field observations, lesson plan design and feedback on ‘mini-lesson’ assignments. Other topics include methods of assessment, classroom management, and sequential developmental learning strategies.

Logistics

This course is typically offered in the Fall semester every other academic year. The course usually meets on Mondays and Wednesdays 1:00 – 2:15. Meeting times during the Summer semesters vary. Students must complete DANC 230 and DANC 320 with a C or better.to enroll in this course.

Course Objectives

In this course, students will:

1. Design developmentally appropriate strategies for teaching dance techniques and creative movement to all age levels, with an emphasis on secondary education.

2. Define objectives, construct lesson plans and units.

3. Assess student learning systematically by planning assessment that is based upon the curriculum goals and behavioral objectives.

4. Evaluate lesson plans and learning experiences in relation to short-range and long-range goals.

5. Adjust instructional plans to meet student needs and enhance learning, based on classroom monitoring strategies, student responses, and assessment data.

Technology Requirement

Assignments are to be word-processed. Continuing and regular use of e-mail (your UMBC account), and Blackboard is expected. All students enrolled in Department of Education (DOE) programs are required to have a TK20 account. TK20 will be used for submitting a Key Assignment in every course in addition to other requirements by program (i.e., portfolios). If you do not already have a TK20 account, you will be required to purchase one. A TK20 student membership may be purchased at https://umbc.tk20.com/campustoolshighered/admissions1.do. The student fee is $103 for five years.
