Application Procedures for Applying to UMBC’s Secondary Education Master of Arts In Teaching (MAT) Program

Applications for admission to our Master of Arts In Teaching (MAT) Secondary Teacher Certification program must be submitted online at www.umbc.edu/gradschool.  All applicants are required to submit accurate and complete documents directly to the Graduate School.

Deadline Dates:
  • Two Year MAT Program – Fall Semester – June 1st   Spring Semester – November 1st
  • 12 Month MAT Program – April 1st (Summer Semester Only)
Required application materials must include:
  • Online application form (including goal statement and recommendation letters)
  • Official transcripts from all colleges/universities; including part-time study
    • Official transcripts of work in progress at the time of application should be submitted as soon as possible
  • Qualifying scores on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (Core) or GRE
    • Reading           Test #5712      Required Score 156
    • Writing            Test #5722      Required Score 162
    • Mathematics   Test #5732      Required Score 150
  • GRE (prior to  9/2011)                       Required Score 1000
  • GRE (taken as of 9/2011)                   Required Score 297
  • (Mathematics & Verbal)
  • TOEFL (International Students Only)
All applications are reviewed by the admission committee. The committee reviews all of your academic and professional qualifications before making an admission decision. Once a decision has been made regarding your application, you will be notified in writing as to whether you were accepted or rejected.  Applicants may be admitted as Full Graduate Status or Provisional Graduate Status.  Applicants who are admitted on a provisional status will be notified as to the condition of their admission; which is determined by the Admission Committee.

It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that a completed application and supplemental materials are received by the deadline date.  We urge all applicants to take note of the deadline dates for each program listed above.   A delay in receipt of your academic credentials could cause a delay in the review process for admission.

Additional Admission Requirements:

All applicants are required to contact the Education Department to schedule an initial advising meeting.  This meeting gives the student the opportunity to discuss their certification options, and to have the advisor review their educational background for certification content requirements.

Student who received their undergraduate degree from UMBC are still required to submit an official transcript to the Graduate School.
